Overview of our Hospital

当院のご案内 写真

Surrounded by many of Nagasaki’s famous tourist sites and overlooking the cruise ships coming into Nagasaki Port, Nagasaki Harbor Medical Center is situated in a beautiful environment that is accentuated by exotic influences. With 513 beds and over 30 medical departments, we serve as a core hospital for the community by providing ① emergency medical care, ② advanced acute care, ③ pediatric and perinatal care, and ④ tuberculosis care, dialysis treatment and disaster medical aid.

On the first floor there is a catheterization laboratory for treating myocardial infarctions and arrhythmia, and examination rooms for conducting CT scans, MRIs and mammograms. The third floor houses an Intensive Care Unit, an Emergency Care Unit and operating rooms. The wards for the Perinatal Care-centered Obstetrics Department, the Pediatrics Department and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are on the fourth floor and the Intensive Care Unit for treating coronary diseases is situated on the fifth floor. We thereby provide all the functions of an acute care hospital.

Furthermore, in the Emergency Room on the first floor, the doctors of the emergency department and other departments are connected in a network, thereby allowing us to accept patients with a wide variety of ailments, from emergency patients in need of operations to acute coronary-disease, digestive-disease, cranial nerve-disease and respiratory disease patients, seriously ill infants, and high risk expectant and nursing mothers.

As a tourist destination, the city of Nagasaki attracts great numbers of foreign visitors each year. In order to be able to provide swift treatment to these people in the event of sudden accidents or illnesses, our hospital provides English, Chinese, Korean and French speaking staff who can assist with medical consultations.

We will continue to offer safe and reassuring medical services, playing active roles on the international scene. It is our aim to be a hospital that will serve as a leader for both our region and all of Japan.

Outpatient / Inpatient

Outpatient treatment

Please go to Information at the entrance. If you have Japanese health insurance and/or a referral letter, please display these before completing registration forms. Staff who can speak English will be contacted to help you. Feel free to ask questions as needed. Payment is due at the end of each visit.
(※We cannot accept foreign currency. Please bring a credit card or Japanese yen when you attend the hospital.)

Important Note First-time Patients

Please understand that all first-time patients without referral letters are required to pay 5000 Yen same-day as a “first treatment fee” at our hospital. This fee is related to our partnership system with other medical institutions in the community. Therefore, for examination and treatment at our hospital, if possible we advise bringing a referral letter (including your treatment history) from your family doctor.

Please also do not forget your Japanese health insurance card if you have one. Also, please bring a list of your current medications if applicable.

Inpatient treatment (Hospitalization)

Through previous examinations, our hospital often treats patients soon after hospitalization so as to reduce total hospitalization duration. For scheduled meetings in which the doctor explains examination procedures, treatment, and precautions after discharge, please make arrangements to be accompanied as a rule by at least two friends or relatives. Especially for any questions about necessity of procedures or any associated risks, please inquire of the doctor-in-charge until you feel sufficiently informed. If there is a language barrier for clarifying questions to your doctor, please do not hesitate to request assistance from one of our fluent English speakers on staff.

Further specifics are available in our English-language hospitalization guide or at our hospital’s Pre-Admission Center. The Pre-Admission Center helps familiarize patients and their families with hospitalization. The Center’s nurses and medical staff can help explain pre-surgery examinations, surgery and treatment, hospitalization orientation, adjustments after hospitalization, associated medication use, or any other questions you might have.

Please note that our hospital is an acute care hospital for patients with emergency or severe conditions. Therefore, once the patient’s condition has somewhat stabilized, in some cases we might plan for ongoing treatment through the referring doctor or family doctor, at another medical institution, or at the patient’s home.

With respect to disclosure of a patient’s medical information, we apply and adhere to our hospital’s regulations.
