Overview of our Hospital

 Overlooking a beautiful waterfront park and a historic port which today receives passenger ships from all over the world, Nagasaki Harbor Medical Center offers medical treatment in a truly unique environment.

The first new structure was completed in February of 2014; at eight floors and two lower levels it includes 364 hospital beds, more than 30 medical departments, and a heliport on the roof. The second construction phase to be completed in 2016 will include treatment facilities for dialysis and infectious disease care-prevention, a new parking facility, and a hospital bed count further raised to 513—all ready for the Grand Opening.

From the Lower Level’s CyberKnife treating tumors by precise robotic radiosurgery, to the 1st Floor with our hybrid operating room for comprehensive treatment of heart disease, the 3rd Floor wards with seven operating rooms including an Intensive Care Unit and an Emergency Unit, the 4th Floor wards with the Perinatal Care-centered Obstetrics Department, Pediatrics Department, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (6 beds), and to the 5th Floor’s Coronary Care Unit, we offer a wide range of enhanced capabilities as an acute care medical hospital.

We are working to strengthen community care through coordination with other medical care facilities, most notably the emergency care network connected to our emergency outpatient unit. We are also further integrating medical specialists into critical care emergency services so that staff can further provide treatment as a single entity.

In addition, as Nagasaki receives numerous visitors from outside Japan, we have established an International Outpatient Clinic which includes a team of interpreters fluent in English, Chinese, Korean, and French, and we conduct language training for all medical and support staff. By working to overcome language barriers, we can respond rapidly to any sudden injuries or illnesses in patients from abroad.

While providing safe and reassuring medical care, and in preparing young doctors for careers on a global scale, we strive to be a hospital that is a leader in medical treatment both in the community and in Japan.

 Our hospital is guided by three missions. The first mission is for our patients and their families. First and foremost, we are dedicated to providing high quality medical care at all times. Our ultimate attention is not on what we can provide but on what the patient is asking, and to attend to the patient’s needs promptly and courteously. The second mission is for our staff and their families. We support working environments and systems that encourage personal responsibility and pride. Fostering a fair and well-balanced atmosphere, evaluations are based on initiative and application of resources at hand. The third mission is for our community. We are unstinting in collaborative efforts towards building and sustaining our community care network.

 The four domains in which our hospital applies specific focus are Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, High-level Acute Medicine, Perinatal Medicine, and Health Policy treatments such as in disaster response and infection control. Structured from these four pillars of medical treatment, we aim to be a hospital renowned for dependable support.

Outpatient treatment

Please go to Information at the entrance. If you have Japanese health insurance and/or a referral letter, please display these before completing registration forms. Staff who can speak English will be contacted to help you. Feel free to ask questions as needed. Payment is due at the end of each visit.
(※We cannot accept foreign currency. Please bring a credit card or Japanese yen when you attend the hospital.)

Important Note re First-time Patients

Please understand that all first-time patients without referral letters are required to pay 3000 Yen same-day as a “first treatment fee” at our hospital. This fee is related to our partnership system with other medical institutions in the community. Therefore, for examination and treatment at our hospital, if possible we advise bringing a referral letter (including your treatment history) from your family doctor.

Please also do not forget your Japanese health insurance card if you have one. Also, please bring a list of your current medications if applicable.

Inpatient treatment (Hospitalization)

Through previous examinations, our hospital often treats patients soon after hospitalization so as to reduce total hospitalization duration. For scheduled meetings in which the doctor explains examination procedures, treatment, and precautions after discharge, please make arrangements to be accompanied as a rule by at least two friends or relatives. Especially for any questions about necessity of procedures or any associated risks, please inquire of the doctor-in-charge until you feel sufficiently informed. If there is a language barrier for clarifying questions to your doctor, please do not hesitate to request assistance from one of our fluent English speakers on staff.

Further specifics are available in our English-language hospitalization guide or at our hospital’s Pre-Admission Center. The Pre-Admission Center helps familiarize patients and their families with hospitalization. The Center’s nurses and medical staff can help explain pre-surgery examinations, surgery and treatment, hospitalization orientation, adjustments after hospitalization, associated medication use, or any other questions you might have.

Please note that our hospital is an acute care hospital for patients with emergency or severe conditions. Therefore, once the patient’s condition has somewhat stabilized, in some cases we might plan for ongoing treatment through the referring doctor or family doctor, at another medical institution, or at the patient’s home.

With respect to disclosure of a patient’s medical information, we apply and adhere to our hospital’s regulations.
